Malawi's Chakwera Bows Out: President Concedes Defeat to Mutharika in Presidential Election

Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera conceded defeat in the September 16 presidential election, congratulating his predecessor, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, on his victory. In a nationally broadcast address, Chakwera acknowledged Mutharika's insurmountable lead, as shown in the official results released so far by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).

"I called Professor Mutharika to congratulate him on this historic win," Chakwera said, emphasizing his commitment to a peaceful transfer of power. "It is only right that I concede defeat out of respect for your will as citizens and out of respect for the constitution," he added.

Mutharika's Historic Win

Mutharika, 85, is set to return to the State House after losing the 2020 election to Chakwera. The DPP leader's victory marks a significant comeback, with official results showing him leading by over one million votes. The MEC is expected to formally declare the results later today.

Chakwera urged his supporters to remain calm, peaceful, and united as the nation transitions to a new government. He thanked Malawians for their support and conduct during the election, ensuring a seamless transfer of power.

The election outcome comes as Malawi faces economic stagnation, with inflation above 20% for over three years. Nearly three-quarters of Malawians live below the World Bank's poverty line of $3 a day. Mutharika's administration will face significant challenges in addressing these economic woes.
