Bill Gates Raises Alarm: 1 in 7 Northern Nigerian Children Risk Death Before Age Five

Philanthropist and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has issued a stark warning about the survival chances of children born in Northern Nigeria. According to Gates, a newborn in the region faces a 15% probability of dying before reaching the age of five, a figure far higher than the global average.

He attributed this grim reality to persistent challenges such as malnutrition, limited access to quality healthcare, preventable diseases, and weak immunization coverage.

Speaking through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Gates emphasized that urgent interventions are needed to improve maternal and child healthcare, expand vaccination programs, and strengthen public health infrastructure across Northern Nigeria.

Health experts note that improving nutrition, tackling malaria, and boosting access to vaccines could significantly reduce child mortality rates in the region.

The revelation underscores ongoing concerns about Nigeria’s health indices, with the country ranking among the highest globally for child deaths under the age of five.
