Cannabis Dealer Jailed in Lagos

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has sentenced Obayemi Oyetade, a self-acclaimed businessman, to three months imprisonment for dealing in illicit substances, including a potent strain of cannabis popularly known as “Canadian Loud.”

The convict was arraigned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) after being caught with several sachets of cannabis and drug-laced consumables, including chocolates and gummies, which he supplied to guests at a Lagos hotel.

During proceedings, the prosecution informed the court that Oyetade’s activities posed a serious threat to public health, especially to unsuspecting young people. The court noted that despite being a first-time offender, the gravity of the offense could not be overlooked.

Justice Abimbola Awogboro, in her judgment, sentenced him to three months in prison without the option of a fine, warning that similar drug-related offenses would continue to attract stiff penalties in line with Nigerian law.

The NDLEA reiterated its commitment to clamping down on illicit drug trafficking and abuse, warning hoteliers and entertainment operators to monitor their premises closely and report suspicious activities.

The conviction is part of ongoing efforts by Nigerian authorities to reduce the circulation of hard drugs in Lagos and across the country.
