Senate Commences Screening of INEC Chairman Nominee, Prof. Joash Amupitan

Abuja, Nigeria — The Nigerian Senate has officially begun the screening process of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, the nominee for the position of Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Professor Amupitan, a respected legal scholar and constitutional expert, was nominated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to head the nation’s electoral body following the expiration of the tenure of the former chairman.

During the screening session at the National Assembly, lawmakers questioned the nominee on issues relating to electoral transparency, voter confidence, and the use of technology in future elections.

Senators also emphasized the need for reforms that would strengthen Nigeria’s democratic process and ensure credible elections free from manipulation or violence.

In his response, Prof. Amupitan pledged to uphold integrity and fairness if confirmed, promising to “restore public trust in the nation’s electoral system through transparency, innovation, and accountability.”

The Senate Committee on Electoral Matters is expected to conclude its deliberations and present a report to the full Senate chamber for confirmation in the coming days.
