🚨 BOKO HARAM THREATS HALTED FUEL SUBSIDY REMOVAL, NOT PROTESTS - SANUSI

Former President Goodluck Jonathan's decision to suspend the removal of fuel subsidy in 2012 was motivated by fears of Boko Haram's suicide bombings targeting protesters, not by pressure from street demonstrations, according to the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.

Sanusi, who was the Central Bank Governor at the time, revealed this at the Oxford Global Think Tank Leadership Conference, stating that Jonathan's administration was concerned about national security threats posed by Boko Haram.

"The only reason the government compromised and did 50% not 100% was Boko Haram," Sanusi said, adding that the government feared suicide bombers could infiltrate protest crowds, causing mass casualties.

Sanusi commended Jonathan's determination to push through the reform, despite security risks. He believes that removing the subsidy in 2011 would have caused minimal pain compared to Nigeria's current economic hardship.

The Emir criticized Nigeria's fuel subsidy system, calling it a "naked hedge" that bankrupted the nation. He urged leaders to prioritize public service over personal gain.
