U.S. Approves $32.5 Million Aid to Tackle Hunger in Nigeria

The United States government has approved $32.5 million in humanitarian assistance to help Nigeria combat worsening hunger and malnutrition, particularly in conflict-affected regions of the country.

According to officials, the aid package will target over 764,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) and vulnerable families across Nigeria. The support will include:

• Distribution of staple food supplies

• Provision of nutritional supplements for children and pregnant women

• Emergency health support in high-risk communities

• E-vouchers to help families purchase essential goods

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) emphasized that the funding is part of Washington’s broader commitment to address food insecurity in Africa’s Sahel region, where millions face the threat of hunger due to conflict, climate change, and economic challenges.

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, continues to grapple with a deepening food crisis. Rising inflation, displacement caused by insurgency in the northeast, and the impact of climate shocks on agriculture have left millions in urgent need of food assistance.

U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria Richard M. Mills Jr. said the aid reflects “America’s solidarity with the Nigerian people during this difficult time.”

“No family should have to choose between feeding their children and other basic needs. This assistance is designed to ensure that the most vulnerable communities have access to food and life-saving nutrition,” the envoy noted.

Humanitarian agencies welcomed the announcement but stressed the need for sustained local and international action to prevent long-term famine.

The Nigerian government has also pledged to complement the U.S. assistance with its own initiatives to strengthen food security, support farmers, and stabilize food prices across the country.
