‘Painful Tragedy’: FG Mourns As Niger Boat Accident Claims Over 30 Lives

The Federal Government has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic boat accident in Niger State that has claimed the lives of more than 30 people.

The ill-fated boat, carrying dozens of passengers, reportedly capsized on Thursday while navigating the River Niger in the Mokwa Local Government Area. Local authorities confirmed that the victims included men, women, and children, with many others still missing as rescue efforts continue.

In a statement released on Friday, the Minister of Interior described the incident as a “painful tragedy,” extending condolences to the families of the deceased and assuring that the government is working with state emergency agencies to provide relief and intensify search operations.

Eyewitnesses say the boat was overloaded and encountered strong currents before it capsized, a recurring challenge in many riverine communities where water transport remains the primary means of movement.

President Bola Tinubu also commiserated with the people of Niger State, urging improved safety measures on inland waterways to prevent future occurrences.

This accident adds to the growing concerns about boat mishaps across Nigeria, particularly in states where poor infrastructure and unsafe travel conditions continue to endanger lives.

Authorities say investigations are underway, while community leaders have called for stricter enforcement of safety regulations, provision of life jackets, and sensitization of residents on safe water transport practices.
