Peter Obi Slams Proposed Salary Hike for Politicians, Calls It Greed Over Welfare

The former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has condemned the recent proposal by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to increase the salaries of political leaders, describing it as reckless, insensitive, and unjustifiable.

Obi noted that the move comes at a time when millions of Nigerians are battling with worsening economic hardship, making such a decision not only provocative but also “a shameless grab for more at the expense of the struggling majority.”

He stressed that political leadership should be about service to the nation and not an avenue to accumulate wealth.

“Such thinking, in the face of faster-eroding living standards of the people, not only portrays the insensitivity of leaders but also exposes their greed,” Obi said.

The former presidential candidate expressed disappointment that the RMAFC is prioritizing politicians’ welfare over that of security personnel, particularly police officers, who remain underpaid despite carrying enormous responsibilities.

He urged the government to redirect attention to improving the lives of public workers and ordinary Nigerians who form the backbone of the country.

“We call on the RMAFC to prioritise the welfare of Nigerians, particularly those in the public service, who have been neglected for far too long. A new Nigeria is POssible,” he concluded.
