Cholera Outbreak in Zamfara Claims Lives, Over 200 Infected
Bukkuyum, Zamfara State | August 28, 2025
A deadly cholera outbreak has hit the Bukkuyum Local Government Area of Zamfara State, leaving at least eight people dead and more than 200 others infected across 11 communities.

Local health officials confirmed that the outbreak began earlier this week, spreading rapidly due to poor access to clean water, sanitation challenges, and limited medical facilities in the affected villages.

Community leaders say insecurity in the region has made the situation worse, as bandit activities have restricted movement and delayed victims from reaching treatment centers on time.

Lawmakers representing the area have called on both the Zamfara State Government and the Federal Ministry of Health to immediately establish emergency cholera treatment centers and deploy rapid response teams to prevent further loss of life.

Residents are also urging for the provision of safe drinking water, health education, and adequate medical supplies to curb the spread of the disease.

Cholera is a waterborne disease that spreads through contaminated food and water, leading to severe diarrhea and dehydration. Without prompt treatment, it can be fatal within hours.

This outbreak adds to Nigeria’s growing public health challenges, with experts stressing the need for long-term investment in rural healthcare infrastructure, sanitation, and security to prevent recurring epidemics in vulnerable communities.
